May 10th 1989 is a date of particular importance for the history of the Macedonian sport. On that day Dimitar Ilievski-Murato became the only Macedonian ever to conquer Mont Everest, unfortunately never parting from its icy embrace.

To Bitola, he is the unforgettable hero that never made it back from the Himalayan expedition. He is the first Macedonian who conquered on the world's highest mountain peak, Mount Everest (8848m). However, he died tragically on the slopes of K2 (Mount Everest) on his way down. In his honor, a traditional march to Pelister is organized every year.[link]
